The United States Mint planned coin releases for January, 2018, include a plethora of coins. Some are familiar issues, while others are commemorative coins.

The month begins with an often awaited collector’s coin, the 2018 proof American Silver Eagle. It is scheduled for a January 4 release. Collectors should prepare for this exciting coin’s release. It is currently scheduled to be the first coin released by the United States Mint in 2018. This proof coin will have the W mintmark of the West Point Mint.

Special Event Coins

Foreign mints have for years issued special coins that can be given to commemorate an event in a person’s life. The United States Mint plans to issue the Birth Set and the Happy Birthday Set, each containing five coins; the penny, the nickel, the dime, the quarter, and the half dollar. These sets are mounted on presentation cards. In addition, the United States Mint plans to issue the Congratulations Set, which is a one-ounce fine silver American Silver Eagle mounted in a presentation card. The Congratulation Set can be used to commemorate an anniversary, wedding, graduation, or other special event. The planned release date for these coins is January 11.

Commemorative Silver Dollars for World War I

On January 17, seven commemorative releases are planned to be available. These will be commemorating the centennial of World War I. Each will contain a silver dollar, but five of the seven releases will also include a medal.

The proof coin and the uncirculated coin, the World War I Commemorative Silver Dollar, will be released. There will also be the World war I Commemorative Silver Dollar in a set with one of these medals; the Air Service Medal, the Army Medal, the Navy Medal, the Marine Corps Medal, and the Coast Guard Medal. The dollar coins are minted at Philadelphia, but the medals are to be from all four operating mints. The Air Service Medal will be from Denver, the Army Medal will be from West Point, the Navy and Coast Guard Medals will be from Philadelphia, and the Marine Corps Medal will be from San Francisco.

The America the Beautiful Quarters


January 23 is the planned release date for the 2018 America the Beautiful Quarter Proof Set. These coins will bear the S mint mark of the San Francisco Mint. They include Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore representing Michigan, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore representing Wisconsin, Voyageurs National Park representing Minnesota, Cumberland Island National Seashore representing Georgia, and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge representing Rhode Island. This set will give collectors a view of the many quarters to follow, from circulation to five-ounce silver coins.
