The Official Alaska State Medallions in Silver and Gold is a result of the State of Alaska which has, by statute, authorized an annual art contest.  The contest is open only to residents of Alaska.  The subject matter must be significant to Alaska.  The winning entry is used to design the Official Alaska State Medallion for a year.  This official medallion is, by law, only to be struck to meet the demand during the year of issue.  This has resulted in some very low mintage years.

Official Alaska State Medallions in Silver and Gold Details

Wonderful Medallion Series

The Proof Official Alaska State Medallions are minted in fine silver, 24-karat gold, and silver gilded with gold.  They are minted by the Alaska Mint in Anchorage, Alaska, a private mint.  That they are not coins with denominations would normally inhibit the desirability, and hence the value from soaring.  However, unlike most silver rounds and gold rounds these medallions have an official status, or at least a quasi-official status, since they are prescribed and sanctioned by state law.

The medallions are minted in both proof and proof-like finishes, and it is the proof medallions that command the attention of collectors.  Fortunately, they are easy to distinguish.  The proof-like, or bullion version, medallions have a reeded edge.  The proof issues have a smooth edge into which the medallion is engraved, including its serial number.  There is also a golden bronze version, which is more economical, but less likely to go up in value.

Each medallion has an obverse that includes the Seal of the State of Alaska.

Proof Official Alaska State Medallions Evolve

Art Improves

The subject matter has always included an animal indigenous to Alaska, but the reccent medallions also include the beautiful Alaskan terrain, enhancing the visual effect of the art.

There is no prohibition on the same artist winning in multiple years, and this has happened.  Nor is there any prohibition on using the same subject matter.

Unfortunately, the same subject matter can, and often is, used in other silver medallions by the Alaska Mint.  So make certain you are getting the silver medallion, or gold medallion, that is part of the Official Alaska State Medallion series.  The inclusion of the Seal of the State of Alaska is also used on other medallions, so its inclusion is of no help.
