Gold Buffalo Among Coins to Be Released

Gold Buffalo Among Coins to Be Released

Gold Buffalo Coming Out in May

The Gold Buffalo coin, one of the most treasured issues on the United States Mint, will be released May 10, 2018.  The coin features the image taken from the Buffalo Nickel.  The design was made by James Earle Fraser for the nickel series that began in 1913.

The recycling of classic images is not new.  The Walking Liberty Half Dollar had its reverse reused for the silver American Eagle coin.

The need for this coin came about when, although popular in the United States, the American Gold Eagle has a disadvantage when compared to foreign gold bullion pieces.  The American Gold Eagle is only twenty-two karat gold.  The need the Gold Buffalo fills is that the United States Mint has a series of twenty-four karat gold coins, or 0.9999 pure.

The Gold Buffalo Coin

The Details

The coin being released in May will bear the W mintmark for West Point.  It has an assigned weight of one Troy ounce.  The coin being released is to have a proof finish.  The denomination of the coin is fifty dollars, a nominal denomination considering the price of an ounce of gold.

The Gold Buffalo proof coin comes with a certificate of authenticity, and a display case.  The case is a box made of hardwood.

Both the weight and the purity of the gold is stamped on the reverse of the coin.

The obverse of the coin is the effigy of a Native American that was also used in the Buffalo Nickel.

This is the newest coin in a series.

The 2018 Uncirculated Coin Set

Another May Release

On May 14, 2018, the United States Mint plans to release the 2018 Uncirculated Coin Set.

This set contains one each of the five 2018 America the Beautiful Quarters for both the Denver and the Philadelphia Mints.  They are the quarters for the National Lakeshore in Michigan, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia, and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island.

In addition, the set contains for each of the two mints already mentioned a Native American Dollar featuring Jim Thorpe of Olympic and football fame.

The set also contains one each from the two mints mentioned a Kennedy Half Dollar, a Roosevelt Dime, a Jefferson Nickel, and a Lincoln Penny.  (Some numismatists insist on calling the penny a cent, claiming pennies are English coins.  However, the United States Mint refers to the coin as a penny on its website.)

There is total of twenty coins in each set.

The Silver American Eagle

The Last Coin Scheduled for a May Release

On May 24, 2018, the United States Mint plans its last release of the month, the Silver American Eagle coin.  This coin is a one-ounce fine silver coin with the denomination of one dollar.  This coin is a West Point minted coin.  It is a very popular coin.  The coin will come with a certificate of authenticity and a display case.
