What Are Zentangle Art Coins?

It is insufficient to simply say Zentangle art coins are coins that feature Zentangle art.  That might suffice if we first know what Zentangle art is, but if you are like me it comes as an obscure term.  Yet information is easy to find.  Zentangle art is a piece made of lines, curls, dots, and any other shapes that one can doodle on a piece of paper.  Yes, it is literally a collection of small markings that come together to form a fantastic piece.

Zentangle art has been around since a pair of artists, Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts, introduced it in 2003.

 2017 Zentangle Art Coins

The Great Grey Wolf

In 2017, the Royal Canadian Mint released the Great Grey Wolf.  This is the first of the Royal Canadian Mint’s Zentangle Art series of coins.  Each coin is two ounces of fine silver, with a purity of 0.9999.  The diameter of each coin is fifty millimeters, giving a large surface.  Large surface coins allow for large images with greater detail.  The coins are minted with a proof finish.  Mintage is limited to four thousand coins.  The denomination of the Great Grey Wolf coin is thirty Canadian dollars.

The artist for the reverse of Great Grey wolf coin is Jari van der Linde.  The obverse features the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

2018 Zentangle Art Coins

The Great Horned Owl

In 2018 the Royal Canadian Mint followed with the second coin in the series of Zentangle Art coins.  This coin features the Great Horned Owl.

The Great Horned Owl coin has the same specifications as the Great Grey Wolf coin.  The design on the reverse of the second coin of this impressive series is by the same artist.  And, the obverse is also by the artist who designed the obverse of the first coin.

Animals on Coins

Canadian Coin Themes

The Royal Canadian Mint frequently uses images of Canada on coins.   Animals indigenous to Canada in particular form a frequently recurring theme in many Canadian coin series.  Animals are popular, and using animals makes to coins more appealing.

This series does not list future releases.  Many Canadian coin series list the entire series by title, and even give release dates for future releases.  This one, however, will be discovered as releases occur.  There is certainly enough material for a potentially long series.

The coins are available at Ebay.
