Britannia Coins Royal Mint Precious Metal
The Britannia coins have new versions.
The Britannia silver coin is a long standing coin of high reputation from the Royal Mint. It serves as a trade dollar around the world. In historical times money used for international trade was precious metal based.
The gold Britannia shares with the gold Sovereign the reputation of the long standing coin of the British gold standard. It has a worldwide recognition as a respected gold piece. The history and reputation of the Royal Mint itself for quality and consistency of precious metal content is at the root of this reputation.
There is also a platinum Britannia.
What is New with Britannia Coins?
How Do 2018 Britannia Coins Differ?
The Britannia coins have undergone several changes. First, there is the new guilloche design on both the obverse and the reverse near the rim. This is a fancy design that adds to the visual appeal of the coin.
The obverse is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II that was designed by Jody Clark. The reverse is the image of Britannia, designed by Philip Nathan. The Britannia figure was inspired by the warrior queen, Boudicca.

2018 Oriental Inspired Britannia Coins
Gold and Silver
As a commemoration of the Britannia once being used as a coin for trade in the Orient, a new border appears on the obverse of some gold and some silver Britannia coins. This replaces, on the reverse only, the guilloche design added for 2018. This is not a replacement coin, but a second version. Britannia coins without the Oriental influenced addition are also being minted. The Oriental design does not extend to the platinum coin, at least not yet.

Platinum Britannia Coins
New for 2018.
The platinum one-ounce Britannia was added. This accompanies the platinum one-ounce Queen’s Beasts coins. As pointed out in other articles, there is an obvious increase in the variety of bullion coins being minted.

One bullion Britannia that does not appear on the Royal Mint’s bullion website is the one-tenth ounce platinum Britannia. It is available from several dealers such as J M Bullion.
Collector Versions of the Britannia
First Out Is Silver
The silver Britannia coin in mint packaging is now available at the Royal Mint. This coin does not have the guilloche border, nor the Oriental border. It should soon be joined by the proof silver coin and the gold range of Britannia coins. Whether the platinum coin will be available in either size as a proof or brilliant uncirculated coin is uncertain. Also uncertain is whether collector versions of the Britannia will be available with the Oriental border. But, the guessing and having hope is part of the excitement of coin collecting.
