2018 Silver Reverse Proof Set of Coins

2018 Silver Reverse Proof Set of Coins

Silver Reverse Proof Set from San Francisco Mint

The San Francisco Mint is about to release the 2018 Silver Reverse Proof Set.  The set will commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of proof sets being minted by the San Francisco Mint.

In earlier years proof sets were minted at the Philadelphia Mint.  The San Francisco Mint produced circulating coins along with the Denver Mint and the Philadelphia Mint.  Then, fifty years ago minting proof sets became the responsibility of the San Francisco Mint.  Proof sets dated 1968 and later bear the S mintmark.

The San Francisco Mint ceased minting circulation coins, but technically once again mints circulation quarters.  The technicality is that quarters sold by the United States Mint include those with S mintmarks.  These are considered circulation coins, but are not placed in circulation.  However, a collector who buys a roll of forty quarters to get one could simply spend the others.  This means that finding a quarter with the S mintmark does not mean it is a proof coin.

The Contents

The 2018 Silver Reverse Proof Set is scheduled for release July 23, 2018, at noon Eastern Time.  The set will contain ten coins, seven of which will be silver coins.

The set will include the silver reverse proof 2018 releases of America the Beautiful quarters.  These include the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, Voyagers National Lakeshore in Minnesota, Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia, and Block Island Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island.

In addition, the Kennedy half dollar coin and the Roosevelt dime coin minted in silver reverse proof.

The silver in each of the seven silver coins is 0.900, the coin standard for many United States silver coins.

The set also will include a Jim Thorpe Native American dollar coin, a Jefferson nickel, and a Lincoln penny.

The coins in this set are two-lens reverse proof coins bearing the S mintmark.

The mintage is limited to two hundred thousand sets, and that is also the mintage for each coin in the set.

The initial price if $54.95, and the mint is limiting orders to ten per household.  The proof sets are already on Ebay, and are being sold at a premium, indicating the expectation the coins will quickly sell out at the United States Mint.

The silver reverse proof set also comes with a certificate of authenticity.

This is the first time the United States Mint has issued a silver reverse proof set.  Prior reverse proof United States coins have been limited to American Eagle coins.

This set is in addition to the other 2018 proof sets, and does not replace the silver proof set for 2018.
