Small Gold Coins

Small Gold Coins

Small gold coins are being minted at both the Royal Canadian Mint.  One particular series that has appeal is the Predator vs. Prey series.

The Predator vs. Prey Small Gold Coins

The small gold coins in this series are very small, and each contains just one-half gram of pure gold.  On the positive side that is quite appealing to collectors who on a budget.  The gold is 0.9999 pure, and has that visual appeal gold coins have, but these coins are tiny.  Some collectors do not care for the size of a coin with an eleven millimeter diameter.

These coins are being minted in limited quantities, with the mintage of the first two coins having been set at 6,500 pieces for each.  It is likely the last two will have the same mintage.  The quality is there since these coins are being struck with a proof finish.  And, each coin comes with a display case and a serialized Certificate of Authenticity.  The denomination, which is important in distinguishing coins from medallions, is twenty-five cents.  Technically, these coins are quarters, and could be spent, so they are legitimately called coins.

The series is set to be a four coin series, and currently the first two of them have been released.

The Traditional Arctic Hare

The Traditional Arctic Hare is the second coin of the series.  It is a little unusual in that it is still the first half of 2016, yet this coin bears the date of 2017.  This is unusual, but the coin is currently available for order, and its image has been posted on the Royal Canadian Mint website.

Ordering Advantage

If both coins are ordered together it might mean free shipping.   Individually, one of these small coins would not meet the threshold of one hundred Canadian dollars which is normally the point where shipping costs to Canada and to the United States are waived.

How Small Are the Coins?

Well, one Troy ounce is just over thirty-one grams, so a half gram coin is slightly less than one-sixtieth of one Troy ounce.  This is the smallest gold coin I am aware of, and is one of several such small gold coins.  Other small half gram coins have been struck by both the Royal Canadian Mint and the Perth Mint of Australia for some time.

The Others

Since the second coin in the Predator vs. Prey series is dated 2017, and has been released so early in 2016, one must wonder what year will be on the last two.  It is almost certain to be 2017.  Regardless of such details, this is a short series and should be easily collected, especially if one were to order the first two from the mint while the supplies are still available, or order using the subscription.

The third coin is scheduled for a September release, and will be titled “Inuit Arctic Fox.”  The first coin, by contrast, is the “Traditional Arctic Fox.”  Immediately following in November, 2016, will be the fourth and final Predator vs. Prey coin, “Inuit Arctic Hare.”  This contrasts with the “Traditional Arctic Hare” which is the second coin of the series.  Images for the third and fourth coins are not yet available, but the entire set is available as a subscription.  The third coin for the subscription will be accompanied by a special collector case.
